Still high on the chocolate I am writing this new blog. Yes, I made some nice vlogs of the Chocoa Festival 2018, you can watch on my site. But, wow hey! What a fantastic day this was! I have no idea how many chocolate* I tasted but my body felt high levels of all the goods chocolate has to offer which I will explain below.
*FIY: I only tasted organic, vegan, dairyfree, glutenfree, soyfree, palmoilfree, RAW chocolate and free of refined sugar. And, I can tell you, the effect felt so much better than several cacao ceremonies I went to.
The Chocoa Festival took two whole days in the ‘Beurs van Berlage’ in Amsterdam. Together with my sweetheart we went the very last day to have a look what it was all about. We had nó idea this festival was that big and so many exhibition stands were present: from local cacao bean-farmers from Ecuador, Peru, Colombia to patisseries in Amsterdam. We regretted a bit we only went one day…
I am finishing this blog a few days later and -haha- I still remember the flow in my body this chocolate tasting gave me! Wow, I think the whole Sunday afternoon I was in this rush of all the good stuff. I can tell you a lot about raw chocolate now, because we registered for the lecture about ‘LOVECHOCK’. Yes, this brand is Europe’s number one in the world of Raw Chocolate and I am loving these bars so much!
Not only the taste of the chocolate is perfect as well the little colorful packages. When you unwrap a Lovechoc bar a little saying comes for free like, ‘I have the courage to be myself’. I am thankful they are available at Marqt and Ekoplaza.
Back to the lecture!! I learned a lot about the process of making a raw Lovechoc bar. The difference with ‘normal’ chocolate is that the beans are NOT roasted. They use yellow cacao beans from Ecuador and the paste is made in the same country before shipping to Europe (did you know they supply their goods in more than 20 countries?).
Other difference is that the process of grinding is made once, while ‘normal’ chocolate is grinding several times. In the halls of the ‘Beurs van Berlage’ you can buy machines who conch the cacao nibs to smooth chocolate. Know that for raw chocolate no conching is needed.
What does raw mean? The raw part refers to the fact the beans are not heated. The temperature will not reach above 42 degrees and therefore all the good nutrients will keep reserved.
Like what? Some people say… theobromine supports a healthy heart; the fibers helps digestion by increasing digestive enzyme production; minerals like magnesium is essential for proper brain functioning; vitamins benefit the cardiovascular system; fatty acids such as oleic acid can lower bad cholesterol and raise good cholesterol levels and last but not least cacao is an antioxidant which promote longevity.
Why use coconut blossom sugar? ‘Normal’ sugar increases your blood sugar level immediately. Why? Because of the high glycemic index (GI). GI measures how quickly a food raises your blood sugar levels. White/brown sugar contains a GI 80-100. For example, potatoes has a GI of 80, an apple 20 and coconut blossom sugar has a low GI of 35-45. That’s why my body can handle this type of sugar, I thought to myself and it is the reason why I reacted always that strong on refined sugar...
Lovechoc has different flavors. They use several types of superfoods like lucuma, maca and gojiberries. Personally, my favorite bar is the one with cherry and chili, but pecan and maca is also a good treat.
What is a superfood actually? In the presentation held by Sandra Zonneveld this definition was used: ‘a nutrient-rich food considered to be especially beneficial for health and well-being.’ Superfoods are a perfect compliment to the mother of all superfoods: cacao!
The lecture was pretty informative and I heard a lot of new things I really did not know, but the best part had still to come: tasting new flavors! We were presented new bars: creamy hazelnut matcha and extra pure (94%). The first one I did not really like if I am honest, but the second one: whoehey, we have a favorite here! I already checked the location of their stand on the map, so definitely wanted to go there and buy some…
To be continued: Next blog is about other raw chocolate brands and the experience of a cacao meditation!
