Driving on my bike through the neighborhoods of Amsterdam I see on every corner a coffee place. Big concerns like the Coffee Company and Bagel n Beans but also the smaller ones. The last have my interest more because they offer a more personal touch and homemade delicacies.
I am on my way to an ice-cream tasting. Not just an ice-cream tasting, it is a VEGAN ice-cream tasting. It makes it double so interested because this ice is made of tea!
I think for me it is nearly 2 years I had any kind of an ice-cream. Nowadays, I do not care for it all. But, I do remember one year I ate every day ice-cream for 10 days in a row. But since I have experienced how my body reacts on any kind of sugar or milk, I am cured. No buckets of Ben & Jerry’s for me.
Well, on Facebook I got to know of this event and I asked her before if there was some kind of milk or sugar in it. She assured me it was sugar free, dairy free, egg free, glute free…
Here I am. Sitting in this nice brand new tearoom and tea shop. I asked this young couple from the Czech Republic why they started this. Their answer was quite clear: they thought Amsterdam had a lack of a good tearoom where they served REAL tea. They saw a lot of coffeebars and althought they served tea in there it did not make them very happy. That could be better done. So they did.
They let me taste a lot of different teas. I am longing for the ice-cream but I hey that can wait? This morning Stephanie made 5 different flavors by herself. Jakub gives me several types of tea. He shows me the real dried leaves and I know because I have been to a tea plantation myself: this is real tea. No Pickwick or Lipton with those pulverized branches of the tea leaves.
On the menu there are so many kinds of tea. You can take away a few ounces as well. My eye sees white tea and I already know that one is going home with me! Stephanie advices me the jasmin ice tea combining the best with the ice-cream. I settle myself down on a pillow in the window seats. The ice tea comes in a huge can, at least 0.5l, with special double glass. Jakub explains to me: so the beverages will stay cold either hot. The taste is marvelous. Pure jasmin.
Hmmm, very welcome on this hot day.Hmmm, so the ice-cream. Bring it on! Stephanie serves the first scoop with little nectarines on a side. The color is like orange-red partly because of the ‘rooibos’ meaning red tea and partly of the peach and carrot in it she explains. The taste is exotic. The structure of the ice is perfect. You really taste the tea. Pure. Yummy!
The second scoop is made of black tea and coconut. This one is sweeten by date syrup. The scoop is way too cold so I let it melt down more. There are a lot of little ice crystals in it so the texture is not my favorite. After melting it a bit, it is really creamy! You do not taste the black tea that much but the coconut is really nice.
The third scoop comes with little pieces of banana. Really nice! This one taste delicious. Stephanie explains it is made of green tea with matcha and banana. Matcha is powered green tea. The smell is good but the taste even better: creamy, sweet like real ice-cream but still light. The scoops are quite big and I have one scoop to go. This one is really my favorite… it is really the best for last. It is also made of black tea but the it is chocolate flavor.
Wow, I cannot remember where to have eaten such a delicious chocolate ice-cream. It is not too creamy, definitely without coconut or dairy taste, it is really refreshing.
All the scoops are very easy to digest. They are not heavy on the stomach. I thank Jacob and Stephanie so much and ensure them I will be back! Definitely! I am do recommend this place to every one!
