Why, when, where and how we eat are more important than what we eat. According to the ayurveda is it 'better' to eat a chocolate muffin which we longed for days with a lot of hmmm's than to eat a healthy macro-bio meal unsconciously in front of the tv.
To remind you... Ayurveda literally means "knowledge of life". This is the traditional Indian medicine. This 3000 year old wisdom is incredibly versatile and focuses on the prevention of diseases. Yoga poses, breathing exercises, meditation and proper nutrition are the basic elements from Ayurvedic perspective for a healthier life in body and mind.
What does a Ayurvedic meal look like? Today our food is so many times cultivated. It barely contains nutricients. Through all of these chemical processes, such as overheating milk, it is more difficult for our bodies to digest. The over-processed food do not nourishe our body any longer. The advantage of f.e. overheating milk is that it extends the shelf life. But, if that is a good thing? This movie shows that MacDonalds has understood the idea of a long shelf life. The burger and fries look after 4 years (!) exactly the same.
Brussels sprouts and spinach!
Liese recommends to make sure every meal reveal the six tastes, which are at the heart of the ayurveda: sour, sweet, salty, pungent, bitter and astringent. Every taste works on the various digestive processes in our body. To keep agni (our digestionfire) working, the taste 'pungent' is good, found in black pepper, chili peppers, thyme, rosemary and parsley. Bitter flavors, such as brussels sprouts, chicory and turmeric, activate the small intestine and will makes you feel lighter an hour after a meal. Food like spinach, tofu and cranberries have a astringent taste and work on the colon for a smoother movement.
Satisfied I'm heading home. Passing by a supermarket I check my urge to eat. I feel my digestive fire, agni, slightly inflame. I don't hesitate and get inside to buy some fresh nice vegetables and fruits and turmeric that are going to be my Ayurvedic meal tonight!
